The path to the drum: building shaman drums

Do you see the drum?
Round it is, like the earth and a mother's womb.
Do you hear the drum?
The rhythm of life it beats.
Do you feel the drum?
Everything we feel flows through it.
Can you sense the drum?
Its vibrations permeate all existence.

Is the drum calling you?
Let it guide you.
Be yourself.

The beat of the drum lets us feel the heartbeat of Mother Earth and our own. It is our companion, our “horse” for the worlds on this side and beyond the fence. The drum is close to the earth and yet carries us into the spiritual worlds.

It can be so many things: an instrument for expressing ourselves. A companion for the dance of life. A connection to the rhythm that is inherent in everything.

It is not the drum that makes the shaman, not even the “shamanic practitioner.” And so, for shamanic work, it can indeed be “only” a tool—but a very powerful one at that.

What is the drum for you?

Its building is as personal as the drum itself. It is not only skin, wood, and hemp that form a connection. You yourself also confront your ideas and desires, perhaps even your fears, and attune yourself to the drum. The building process allows you and the drum to grow together. The result is something that is far more than just a drum.

I would like to accompany you in the building of such a shamanic drum.

Ideally, you should select your materials in advance. During the workshops, we prepare the skin and stretch it onto the frame with string. We prepare the stick for the mallet and make the mallet head.

But because building a drum is much more than a craft activity, the workshop has a ritual framework. We sit in a circle, light candles, burn incense, go out into nature (if time permits), and ask the spiritual worlds for guidance. There will be space for conversation, perhaps outside by the fire. At the end, we consecrate the drums so that our intention makes them the powerful tools they are meant to be.

Dates:

In recent years, it has proven best to simply hold a workshop for one or two people in my kitchen or on my balcony. Anyone interested is welcome to contact me at any time.
Seminar fee: EUR 150, plus material costs

Material costs:

Material costs (deer or goat hide):
Diameter 35 cm: 160 EUR
Diameter 40 cm: 200 EUR
Diameter 45 cm: 210 EUR
Diameter 50 cm: 220 EUR
Diameter 55 cm: 230 EUR
Diameter 60 cm: 240 EUR
Surcharges may apply for special requests.

Drums with a diameter of 35 cm are more suitable for children or as pocket drums; due to their limited vibration capabilities, they often do not sound as full. However, they are easy to transport.
Drums with a diameter of 40 and 45 cm are the classics: they sound good and are still light and easy to handle – which is important if you plan to drum for a long time (an Amanita night is not without its challenges in this regard...).
Larger drums are something you (or your spirits) have to want, so to speak. They can sound great, but they also get in the way when you're drumming, and they have to be transported somehow.

Other options:

If you have several people who want to build drums, we can also organize a workshop at your location. In this case, travel and, if applicable, room costs will be added and divided among the participants.

Registration and preparation:

Each hide is unique – there are light and dark ones, thin and thick ones, sometimes with distinctive natural markings. If you would like to choose a specific hide in advance from the available material (mainly deer and goat, but I sometimes also have calf, cow, fallow deer, and horse), you are welcome to come by appointment at any time to select a specific skin. The same applies to the frames stored here.

If you (or your spiritual allies) have specific ideas about the material and do not want to rely solely on the available stock, it is strongly advisable to register at least four weeks beforehand. at least four weeks in advance. Special requests may incur additional charges.
